The irony of future-proofing is that the future is always unknown. If you think you’re future-proofing your business, you are really past-proofing it. We can never know the future.
You can only look at what has previously happened and make corrections on the things for which you were unprepared at that time—in the past. You can examine the actual outcomes based on circumstances and determine how to make improvements should those circumstances occur again. Future-proofing is a play on words. You can only really past-proof based on experience and probabilities.
That activity is often the result of fear, and here’s an interesting thing about fear: we don’t fear the unknown. You can’t; it’s unknown. What you fear is the known, effectively meaning the past. You can’t actually fear the future; it doesn’t exist. When you think you fear the future, you’re actually fearing the past projected into the future.
If you’re beating yourself up for your unpreparedness over an event that never occurred before, you’re wasting time and energy. We can only prepare for something that has already happened, in case it happens again.
In talking about fear, let’s also take a look at panic. Why does it happen? Evolutionarily, we panic for a reason—survival. Panic works like an alarm. It’s the runaway response on steroids. It’s a physiological response to danger. It kept the caveman alive; however, you will rarely face truly dangerous situations that warrant panic; many of them are imagined or at least exaggerated. However, our bodies react. It’s a matter of controlling our mindset. It’s a matter of being prepared for challenging situations that have happened before.
Once you achieve the ability to control your mindset, you may find that you begin to crave challenge. “I did it before, so I can do it again.”
Letting yourself panic eliminates your ability to think and to discern. Instead, surrender to your structure. It will always serve you. You’ve discerned that your structure was good for you. You can handle the challenge.
