What are you Working For?

This weekend I had the great privilege of meeting a wonderful woman with a beautiful soul from Maryland.  Her recent life experiences reminded me of what the primary objective of Getting Results Coaching is all about.  Before I get into that, let me share her story.  Like most people, she and her husband had a dream of what retirement would be like when that fine day arrived.  She told me that he husband worked hard and saved for them to buy a motor home and travel the country to experience new places and good people.  Last year the couple realized that dream.  They bought their carefully thought out, custom coach and took their first long trip in September and October.  They traveled 9,000 all over the country fully experiencing retirement.  That December, an unfortunate turn of events happened when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.  By March, he had passed, burying him on his 61st birthday.  I can only imagine the person he was, as I’m sure he matched the wonderful person she is.  I don’t even need to go into her most recent challenge she is faced with, as if the passing of her husband wasn’t enough.  I know she’ll pull through with incredible strength.

The reason I am writing this story is that many of us fall victim to delaying life until ‘someday’.  That could be retirement.  It could be when I make enough money… Maybe it is when I’m old enough.  Now, I’m not saying that the couple in my story fell victim to this at all, but it does represence me to this common programming. The greatest ailment that we see in our business are people with tunnel vision on making lots of money to ‘someday’ be able to do what they had always dreamt of.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of short and long term goals.  I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.  But, along the way I have made sure to live life every day.  I have chosen to create a business that supports the life I want to live NOW.  The great tragedy here is that from a young age, we are taught to work hard until that one day we can finally get or do what we have always wanted to do.  By all means, keep those dreams alive, but don’t delay your enjoyment today, for something that may never happen someday.

The inquiry I leave you with this week is, how can you business provide you with a greater level of enjoyment today?  Your business should support your life now and for someday.  Remember you are not life support for your business. Your business is to support your life.
