Unproud

Financial advisors should think of themselves as professional athletes. You are always on and everything matters.

What are you not proud of? What in your world does not make you proud? A client of ours had that statement written on his whiteboard, and I questioned him about it. “Is that something you really want to bring your attention to?” And he said, “Yes, because it’s an opportunity to refine myself and to make things better.” In that moment I thought, “Genius! I need to share that insight.”

Where are those opportunities for improvement in your own business and life? At Getting Results, we treat our clients like professional athletes with the belief that everything they do affects their play on the field. If you are an elite athlete, everything you do counts, and since we coach elite capitalists, we believe they are always working, and everything they do… or do not do… affects their business. So if you step back and reflect and ponder about your world, what are the aspects that you are not proud of? Where are you not particularly shining? Now, this is not an “I suck” nor “I am a loser” conversation. It is one of self-reflection.

Are you proud of your office? Does your desk reflect that you are an elite professional?

Are you proud of your marriage? Is it a worthy model for your children?

Are you proud of where you live? Does your home call to you?

Are you proud of how you serve your clients?

Are you proud of your business?

These are simply inquiries or guides designed to make you to think. If you notice you are not particularly proud of something in your world or business, simply shift the question to: “If I were proud of my business, it would look like X, and a small step I could take toward that would be Y.” Then take that action. Practice being a person of excellence in all that you do because everything counts and compounds upon itself. However, if we never take the time to reflect and ponder, we never have the ability to hone, and it’s the slight edges that separate the good from the elite.
